Chapter Meetings

Navigating Special Circumstances: When Impaired Judgement, Anxious Children, & Aggressive Asset Protection Collide
Presented by: Lynn Campisi, J.D., LLM
Sponsored by: PIMCO

We are very pleased to announce that Lynn Campisi of Campisi Law will be the guest presenter at our next chapter meeting on April 23rd, 2020. Mrs. Campisi will explore special circumstances financial advisors are likely to face and need to consider when advising elder clients and their families. She will dive into real-life examples and present case studies to illustrate some of the red flags, family dynamics, and other estate planning areas advisors should be mindful of when engaging in a financial plan with certain elder clients.

A graduate of Loyola University, Lynn earned her law degree from Birmingham School of Law and her LL.M. from The University of Alabama School of Law. A Certified Elder Law Attorney through the National Elder Law Foundation, she is a career long member of the American Bar, Alabama State Board and the Birmingham Bar Association. She is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, Academy of Special Needs Planners, Estate Planning Council of Birmingham, and also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association of Central Alabama, Alabama Coalition for Culture Change, Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation and Shades Valley Rotary. As past President of the Alabama Family Trust, she now serves as Vice President of its Board of Trustees.

The meeting will be held at the Federal Reserve building in Liberty Park. Lunch starts at 11:30, and we will move to our meeting room at 12:00 for the presentation and announcements. We hope you can attend and look forward to seeing you at this month’s chapter meeting! Amid the COVID-19 preparations and precautions, the April meeting may be moved to webinar only. Please monitor your emails for any updates in the coming weeks.

President's Message

Hello Everyone!

Wow what a month! We are all certainly experiencing one of the most unusual months in the history of our world and certainly in our professional careers. The COVID-19 Pandemic will be one of those times that we reminisce on and say, “remember when…….” I know that many of us are working from home right now and are certainly getting experience working with kids, pets, and even spouses or significant others in the background. But we are working, and for that we are blessed.

I am thankful that we were able to offer our March meeting online as a webinar, and I want to thank Ashley Burrell and T. Rowe Price for all the efforts in making that meeting happen. If you attended the webinar and do not see your CE credit soon, please reach out to Ashley or Pat and we will make every effort to get that credited in a timely manner.

With that said, we are not certain exactly when we can offer our meetings in person again, but the board is making every effort to have as much continuity as possible. We are looking at options for our April meeting and may be holding that as a webinar as well. Our speaker will be Lynn Campisi with The Campisi Law firm and she will be discussing Special Circumstances in Estate Planning. Please keep April 23th on your calendar, and we will be communicating exactly how the meeting will take place.

We still have the Baron’s Baseball game on the calendar for May, although that could certainly change. In addition, we are continuing to plan for Symposium in September at The Club.

When you have a moment, I would encourage you to go to our FPA National website at www.onefpa.org for great resources. For example, there is a Volatility Resource Center as well as Pro Bono Planning in the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, if your annual membership is up for renewal, FPA National has made accommodations to pay your membership over time if that is needed.

Lastly, I feel that we are in one of the greatest professions and it is times like this that our clients need us the most.   Sometimes it’s tough and we may feel that we don’t have all the answers as we reach out to guide them.   But, as Winnie the Pooh once said, “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”

I wish everyone the best,

Jim

Outreach

Members of the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) have been committed to supporting underserved communities by providing access to financial planning services on a pro bono basis. This commitment has been a hallmark of the association since the turn of the century with the 9/11 tragedy and continues to this day -- with the realities of COVID-19 (the coronavirus) -- through the hard work and passion of our members and chapters across the country.

To support underserved* individuals who are going to be most impacted financially by COVID-19 and the economic turmoil it is causing, many FPA members are providing short-term, no-strings-attached financial planning guidance to those who need it.

If you're an FPA member and want to volunteer to help in this important effort, we want to hear from you! Please contact FPA Director of Pro Bono Kurt Kaczor, [email protected], to let FPA know and to learn about the eligibility requirements.
