Implications of Investor Behavior           Presented by: Christian Newton

Join us Thursday, March 21st as we welcome Christian Newton, of Dimensional Fund Advisors, to guide us through an interactive look into the topic of behavioral finance. Investment returns are often thought of as a purely quantitative product of markets, risk, timing, or expertise. As investors, our emotional experience plays an equally important role. Christian Newton guides us through a lighthearted "user's manual" of the human brain: exploring how emotions influence decision-making, how even objective ideas are subject to individual perception, and how money can influence cognition. The presentation cites academic research in cognitive psychology and employs live audience-participation experiments. It can produce a new appreciation for how we perceive markets and investments, and aid advisors as they think about how the present the value of their advice.

Christian Newton is a Vice President at Dimensional Fund Advisors. He helps financial advisors leverage Dimensional's capital markets research and its application to portfolio and practice management. Previous to his work in the Global Client Group, Christian spent 10 years in Dimensional's Marketing group, serving variously as Art Director, Head of Interactive, and Vice President of Marketing, with a focus on creating materials for financial advisors. Christian experienced the first wave of internet growth working at consulting conglomerate USWeb/CKS. He holds a BA in history from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His online writing has been profiled in the New York Times and Entertainment Weekly.

The meeting will be held at the Federal Reserve building in Liberty Park.  Lunch starts at 11:30, and we will move to our meeting room at 12:00 for the presentation and announcements.  We hope you can attend and look forward to seeing you at this month’s chapter meeting!

FPA Guest Policy
Effective 1-1-2014

In an effort to boost membership, we have removed the financial incentive to be a continual guest at chapter meetings. All first-time guests may attend chapter meetings at no charge. A guest’s second and all further meetings require a $50 charge. As an incentive to join, members receive great discounts for chapter meetings, our membership outing, and the Symposium, plus access to free CE in the Journal of Financial Planning. Between the networking, the continuing education, and the advocacy of our profession, we believe that the cost of membership is far exceeded by the value.
